It is not properly aligned yet but I guess I will do that when I have some real help over. The door opens and shuts but to open it takes a good tugging. It is catching on the pillar latch cuz its sagging about a quarter inch too much. Believe it or not but a 1/4" adjustment by yourself is pretty tough, even if you do have a jack under the door! HAHA.

Oh well, until next time (driver door)...

boyz in da HOOD!!

Yep, you guessed it. I got the hood painted and installed! Granted all might panels are not aligned properly, I think it still looks nice. I will wait to align everything once my doors are installed.

I painted the underside with some rustoleum hammer finish (update pics to follow). Rolled it on and brushed in the tight spots. Hopefully it holds up with my engine heat.

Note to self: While installing a million pound hood that you and your friend are holding up, DO NOT ask your wife if she can help with putting a bolt in and screwing it. She just might lean over and get a cramp right as she gets the bolt in place... thus dropping the bolt down into the engine bay. Just got the grille installed with the help of ma boy and daughter! He is and excellent riveter and she takes some excellent pics! Check it out, this is how I did it incase you need help with yours.

1. first remove grille and disassemble headlights and hardware from old grille. The old grille can be removed by three bolts located behind the radiator/grille support panel, located inside the fender well.

2. Rivet holes on the original grille are 3/16" so I started with a slightly smaller drill bit. I made pilot holes through all the rivets (4 per side, 2 in middle) which did not quite knock out the rivets. So I finished them off with a full 3/16" drill bit. They all came out very easy and the pilot holes made it even easier.

3. Next I cleaned up, primed, and painted my headlight buckets. They are not too visible so I wasnt much concerned with the looks, just that they are a fresh black.

4. after the paint was completely dry, I begin to mount the headlight buckets into my NEW grille! First fit it in to make sure you have the correct ones on each side. I dont believe they will fit opposite. I used 3/16" diameter aluminum rivets with a gripping range of 1/8".
These work PERFECT!

*rivets used
-----------------------------------------------------

*how to insert rivet into gun. Next get a strong 3 year old to pump those rivets in while you hold the pieces together! Again, there should be 4 rivets per side and a middle support bar. My NEW grille came with two middle support bars so I also riveted those in.

6. I think I'm getting the hang of it! I went to my friends paint shop and he showed me how to set up my gun better and how to get better strokes. I experimented using his technique on my cab cowl panels and I like the results! I even put on my emblems just to see how it looks.

I also finished my fenders and grill support with results that I am happy with. I will post pics soon. I REALLY need to get the doors done so I can start the inside interior work (carpet / seats).

I cant wait until I can start hanging and aligning all my body panels! I had some heavy striping effect and fisheyes on some areas. I WILL fix these areas. To top it off, my compressor broke when I accidentally knocked it over. I WILL fix that also :) Anyway, here are some images.<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; to getting this baby in paint. With some help from Rudy and Carlos after the bed removal, they were also able to help me do some paint removal on the outter cab.

Today I was able to finish off removing the rest of the paint, got the doors off, prepped door jambs, and finished body filler work. Needless to say it was an ALL day task and I am super SMOKED!! It was very rewarding in the end however because I got to lay down my first coat of etch primer. This should take care of any corrosion for now.

Did I forget to mention the troubles I had getting the door check released? LOL... I tried everything BUT tapping the roll pin upward.

So here are the pic of the cab in primer.

WOKE UP ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BED!

Well, not exactly waking up on the wrong side of the bed, but I did get the bed off the frame today.

Removal went fairly easily. We didnt have to use me engine hoist. Carlos showed up and helped us get it on four standard jackstands where it will rest until I can get to it. I have my work cut out for me.

There are only three major body work areas I'm concerned about. Besides filling in 66 body trim holes and still needing a tailgate! Here are some pics of the areas I'm talking about.

Upper bed rail is bent pretty badly. I think I'm going to replace this panel with a new one and paint the inside of the bed with some bed liner like Hercules. I needed to do this in order to sand my dash as well as areas under the window gasket/moulding.

Pulling out the windshield was not too hard. Actually much easier then I thought it would be.

1. The first step was to use a slit the rubber moulding all around the outside of the chrome window trim (outside the truck). The blade didnt even have to be especially durable, as in my case I used an x-acto knife without even chipping the blade once.

2. I cut about 2-3 feet at a time and peeled off the moulding. After I did this I can see the edge of the chrome trim and how the trim seated on the window edge.

3. After doing this several times on one side I was eventually able to pull out the chrome trim without bending or ruining it. This is probably not necessary as I later learned that it could have just popped out with the entire window.

4. Now with all the rubber moulding trimmed away you can see the windshield edge. I then had a friend go inside the truck and gently push the windshield outward. He used even pressure with one hand on driver side and the other on the passenger side. I figured this would evenly distribute any stress.

5. After that I held the windshield out until he can come around and help me lift it out!

6. DONE!! Now store the glass upright in a safe location. I chose to store it on 3 2x4's so that it is raised off my garage floor with a thick blanket between them. Then I roped it to my workbench so that it wont fall over.

Here are some pics of how it looks with the windshield removed. I will be sanding and prepping these areas for paint ASAP! I can also get to the dash MUCH easier now!

Sit Down and Shut Up!!

Started working on reupholstering my seats. I purchased covers and am having them put on professionally. I would have loved to do it myself, however high density foam sells for about $100 for the seat cushion and $50 for the backrest. I just paid $100 for someone else to do the foam work and seat cover installation.

I did remove the old cover and foam padding. Of course, there was the dreaded broken side spring on the driver side. This is the outmost spring that pretty much holds out the outside of the seat cushion.

It looked like the previous owner had a spikey ass! That or he kept forgetting to remove the screwdriver from his back pocket on a daily basis.

I also bought my carpet kit. Both items of course will not be put on until I have finished painting the inside of the cab.

Ok.. Here is an update as of 10/28/06. The new seat covers are on. I kind of have mixed feelings about just getting them done entirely at a shop. However, its the shops fault because about 3 different shops could not just give me a quote in person. They ALL had to supposedly see the seats even though the shops have been around 20 years. They should know what this bench seat looks like... for crying out loud. All the seats are just about the same for chevy trucks 1960-1980ish. So...anyway, here are the updated pics.

updated image of underneath seat....

Most Of Front-End Primered

Well, I finally got the bodywork and primer done for the better half of the front end completed. In the photos I provided the body parts are still not aligned as they will be after I finish the paint job. I just quickly pieced them for a quick runway photo shoot. lol.

As I mentioned before, I filled the hood and fender seams for a smoothed out look. I also filled all the body trim holes with lead.

I think Im gonna finish up the driver side door and roof. I got all the body work done on my hood and passenger fender. I was able to get a nice coat of etch primer followed by one coat of filler primer. I will definately be block sanding and applying additional coats of filler primer to get it nice and smooth. First I will complete the front end completely up to a first coat of filler primer. You can see I did not align the body parts yet, I just put them back on to please my neighbors.

Oh yeah, by the way... This would not have been completed today if it werent for the excellent help of my homie Ludguin "the Penguin" Trejo, aka SPINBAD. Thanks man! I owe you one. Power steering pump...??? HAHA. Not quite what I was hoping for. I think 3 inches would be better but its ok, the cutting is only temporary until I buy the drop springs.

Before I was able to remove the springs for cutting I needed to seperate the ball joints. This process took me some time. FYI, ball joints that have been resting in place for over 40 years do not part so easily. It took me about 3 weekends of trying finally pop it. It also cost me my first city "Official Notice" due to the fact that I left the front of the truck on jack stands for that period of time.

I was told by many folks in the chevytalk.com forum that by using the pickle fork to seperate my ball joints I would most likely damage the ball joint dust boot. Thats perfectly fine right? I can always buy a new one.... WRONG!!! I looked high and low for a matching one but couldnt find it. I ended up finding a complete ball joint replacement at "The Truck Shop" in Orange, CA. The kit came with everything. Ball joint, castle nut, cotter pin, dust boot, and grease fitting for only $14.00. Its probably a good idea I replace them anyway.

*** Here are some before and after images ***

double click images to enlarge

*** Ball Joint Seperation Steps(use at your own risk)***

1. Loosen castle nut until top of flush with upper most ball joint thread.

5. Remove shock from lower control arm. Upper mount is removal is not needed.

6. Wedge a pickle fork into the area shown by the green arrow. Then hit the pickle fork with a good BFH. You REALLY have to pound the sh*t out of it. Well, at least in my case.

7. When you have done it correctly you will kind of hear it pop free. The castle nut should retain it from popping off completely.

8. Slowly lower the floor jack. Be careful, at this point the spring is wanting to jump out!

9. After completely lowering the floor jack my spring was now fully decompressed. It did sort of jump a bit but the chain held it from going anywhere.

10. You are now free to replace the spring.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

disclaimer: I assume no responsibility for any problems you incure by following these instructions. The issue was finding the proper fitting for the flared end of the steel tubing to go into the npt threaded hole of the radiator. Very had to find this fitting ANYWHERE. I tried hardware stores, plumbing stores and of course auto parts stores. By luck of the draw I stumbled on this "pipe fitting wharehouse" and they had it all.

The Truck will start up and run, however I have not actually drove it. I have an issue with tons of white smoke coming out of my exhaust. Most likely coolant/water leaking from the head gaskets. Im gonna have to pull off my valve covers and re-torque the heads down. Hopefully its not gonna require valve adjustments.

Another problem is that if I leave the battery connected overnight it will be dead. Something is drawing current but I have not looked into that yet.

Im still anxious to start body work even though the truck isnt drivable yet. Patience are being tested!!!

Mechanical Fan Install

FEBRUARY - 2006
*************************************
My LIL MAN
chillin' in front of his truck

So I decided to go with a mechanical fan. I hear its better in the long run then electric. So I may loose a few HP's... oh well.

Here are a few pics from different angles during installation

nice pic from the sideview. I admit... this cab looks craptastic! But I promise it wont look like that for long! So I decided its time to get poppin on doing something about the inside. I first removed my butt-ugly bench seat so as to reveal the beautifully covered floor pans.
Ahh Yess... Floorpans covered beautifully in some sort of factory weather treatment. At first I tried to remove this stuff with a simple scraper spatula, but the adhesive kicked my ass. So, out comes the handy air-chisel!! That literally saved me lots of blisters and a fulls days work.
Yep.. .Thats me sitting on nuthin' but floor.
Time to start sanding down to the metal. Off with the adhesive residue and surface rust!!! Due to sunlight restrictions I was only able to get to the passenger side. Sealed it in etch-primer and followed up with regular primer.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

*** March 5, 2006 - SUNDAY***

Well.. It was pretty painful to get it out being that I had to do it by myself. Thanks to my cherry picker and cut-off wheel on the grinder. I was able to cut off a few rusty bolts. The liftgate had to be dropped to the floor rather than lifted up. Kind of strange but it worked out better for me anyway.

So after the liftgate was removed I decided now was a good time to take out the wood. It came out pretty easy with the help of mr. crowbar. The wood was REALLY bad and mostly just feel apart. There are still a couple stubborn boards in there but I will get them out later.

Moulding/Trim Removal & Hole Filling

OCTOBER 30, 2005

Today I will be removing the chrome trim and filling the holes with body solder. Unfortunately I do not have a welder, nor do I know how to weld. So from everything I have read, this is my next best option. Besides its an old school trade I wouldnt mind learning. The supplies were hard to find locally but persistence paid off. I found the supplies needed from a catalog but I HATE shipping costs. Im on a budget here and I dont have extra money to pay for shipping unless I have exhasuted all other options!

Here is my before image of what the truck passenger side trim was looking like. One piece was removed by who knows what. Fortunately, it allows me to also show you what it looks like underneath the trim. I did not plan on re-using any of the trim so I did not take care when removing the pieces or the moulding tabs.

**********************************************

Here is an image with the moulding removed. I will only show the steps for one hole. The same process is repeated for all trim holes.

**********************************************

I then grinded down to bare metal leaving about 2"-3" around the holes. I also took my Dremel to clean out the inside of the holes. I also took the Dremel ginding bit that looks like a bullet head to bur out the hole and give more clinging surface for the solder. Much like a little counter-sinking technique.

**********************************************

Next, I used the tinning compound I purchased at the same place I bought the soldering sticks. It is just a gray powder, much like sand, that you mix with water. I mixed it too a toothpaste like mixture. Then with an "acid brush" I generously tinned all the metal surface. This included the inner hole. So to tin the area I just got my propane torch and heated up the compound until it evaporated and the metal looked nice and shiney. You have to move the torch around quite a bit as to not heat up the panel too much. Well.. I dont know if you really have to but just to be on the safe side. I dont want to warp anything.

Before you actually apply the body solder I learned it is a good idea to have the "paddle lube" already melted onto your wooden paddle. So now that Im ready I heated up my solder until i saw it start to droop. Then I quickly put the glob just above the hole. Then I got the wooden paddle and smoothed it so it covered the hole. You may need to apply more heat in order to get a nice smooth glob like covering.

**********************************************

After the solder the solder was cooled I kinda poked and jabbed at it just to make sure all adhered well. Everything appeared okay. So I then grinded it down smooth and you can see the results below. I think it came out good.

**********************************************

I still plan on taking the body down to metal all around. But until I can do it right I sprayed some self-etching primer over the body work and then top-coated it with a body filler primer. Now it should be sealed until I can get around to finishing it off. In general, most of the holes came out with a smooth finish but there are a few that will require a bit of filler to cover some pinholes. Almost a year ago from this posting date. These are the very first pics I took of the Truck. Unforntunately there were no images taken of the engine bay before I had removed the original 283 small block engine.

After removal of the engine and dismantling of block I discovered that piston 3 was extremely damaged. About 1/4 of the piston head looks like it was blown off. Possibly some object got into the cylinder. Im guessing a washer fell in the spark plug hole??? Who knows.

Manual Liftgate?? Yep, you go that right. Speaking on terms of all the original buttons and gauges. Ignition looks like it was ripped out and replaced. I smell wiring harness woes!!! Surface rust covers nearly the entire surface of the cab. Nothing a light sanding shouldnt be able to remove though. Luckily is doesnt look like the floor pans and cab corners have any cancer. I will know for sure when its gutted out.

Seats are in obvious need of re-upholstering. Nothing you probably wouldnt do anyway. Driver side window is missing. Which explains surface rust inside the cab.
